Sex and gender are political in the sense that we all negotiate our sexual identities. When the interviewee said that this is hijacked for political purposes, they meant purposes other than gender qua gender. We don’t have a choice but to negotiate our identity (and that’s broader than just sex). We do have a choice about whether we use those negotiations for other purposes, like discrimination.
